Gardner, Samuel
Gardner, Samuel, Russian-American violinist and composer; b. Elizavetgrad, Aug. 25, 1891; d. N.Y., Jan. 23, 1984. He went early to the U.S. and studied violin with Felix Winternitz and Franz Kneisel; also studied composition with Goetschius, and later with Loeffler in Boston. He was a member of the Kneisel String Quartet (1914–15), and also played in American orchs. From 1924 to 1941 he taught violin at the Inst. of Musical Art in N.Y. Among his works were a tone poem, Broadway (Boston, April 18, 1930), and Country Moods for String Orch. (N.Y., Dec. 10, 1946). He publ. Essays for Advanced Solo Violin (I960).
