Fryer, George Herbert, English pianist, pedagogue, and composer; b. London, May 21, 1877; d. there, Feb. 7, 1957. He studied in London with Beringer at the Royal Academy of Music (1893–95) and with Franklin Taylor at the Royal Coll. of Music (1895–98). After further studies with Busoni in Weimar (1898), he made his London debut on Nov. 17, 1898, and subsequently toured in Europe; in 1914 he made his first tour of North America. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music (1905–14), and, after teaching in N.Y. (1915–17), he was on the faculty of the Royal Coll. of Music (1917–47). He continued to tour in Europe, and also played in Canada and the Far East. He publ. Hints on Pianoforte Practice (N.Y., 1914) and composed piano pieces and songs.
