Freire (actually, Pinto Freire), Nelson (José)
Freire (actually, Pinto Freire), Nelson (José), Brazilian pianist; b. Boa Esperanza, Oct. 18, 1944. He began to play the piano at a very early age and made his public debut when he was only 5. After winning the Rio de Janeiro competition at 13, he went to Vienna to study with Bruno Seidlhofer; in 1964 he won the Vianna da Motta Prize in Lisbon. After making a major tour of Europe in 1968, he made his U.S. debut in N.Y. in 1969. He subsequently appeared in all the major music centers, winning particular praise for his reful-gent performances of the Romantic repertory.
