Franks, Rebecca Coupe, trumpet player; b. Nov. 27, 1961. She has gained considerable recognition playing trumpet and flugelhorn with great technical skill. From an early age, she wanted to play the trumpet; her brother played the instrument and she loved hearing the sound. Beginning in the fifth grade, she began taking private lessons, and in ninth grade, she began playing with the nearby college band. By the time she was in high school, she was performing nightly in a local restaurant with much older players. Finishing high school, she then moved to San Francisco, where she joined the band Chevere and met Virginia Mayhew. Moving on to N.Y., she co-led a group with Mayhew, playing Monday nights at the Blue Note. She has performed or recorded with Milt Hinton, Lou Donaldson, and other players.
