Ferrari-Trecate, Luigi

Ferrari-Trecate, Luigi, Italian composer; b.Alessandria, Piedmont, Aug. 25, 1884; d. Rome, April 17, 1964. He studied with Antonio Cicognani at the Pesaro Cons., and also with Mascagni. Subsequently he was engaged as a church organist. He was prof. of organ at the Liceo Musicale in Bologna (1928–31), and from 1929 to 1955 director of the Parma Cons. He wrote several operas which had considerable success: Pierozzo (Alessandria, Sept. 15, 1922), La Bella e il mostro (Milan, March 20, 1926), Le astuzie di Bertoldo (Genoa, Jan. 10, 1934), Ghirlino (Milan, Feb. 4, 1940), Buricchio (Bologna, Nov. 5, 1948), L’Orso Re (Milan, Feb. 8, 1950), La capanna dello Zio Tom (Parma, Jan. 17, 1953), La fantasia tragica, and Lo spaventapasseri (1963). He also composed music for a marionette play, Ciottolino (Rome, Feb. 8, 1922), In hora calvarii, sacred cantata (1956), and Contemplazioni for Orch. (1950).
