Ellis Ellis (real name, Sharpe), Alexander J(ohn)
Ellis (real name, Sharpe), Alexander J(ohn), English philologist, mathematician, and writer on music; b. Hoxton, June 14, 1814; d. Kensington, Oct. 28, 1890. He studied philology and mathematics at Trinity Coll., Cambridge (graduated, 1837). He also studied music. In 1864 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Soc., contributing articles on musical science to its journal, as well as to others. Among his books were On the Basis of Music (1877), On the Measurement and Settlement of Musical Pitch (1877), and Speech in Song (1878).
