Elliott, Paul, English tenor; b. Macclesfield, Cheshire, March 19, 1950. He was a choral scholar at Magdalen Coll., Oxford (1969–72), later pursuing his education at the Univ. of Oxford (B.A., 1973; M.A., 1977). His principal vocal teachers were David Johnston and Peter Pears. He served as vicar choral at St. Paul’s Cathedral (1972–75) and sang with various choral and early music groups, including the John Alldis Choir (1972–76), the Deller Consort (1973–82), the Monteverdi Choir (1973–78), and the Academy of Ancient Music (from 1973); also was a founding member of the Hilliard Ensemble (1974–84) and the London Early Music Group (1976–79). From 1984 to 1989 he sang with the Newberry Consort in Chicago. He toured widely as a solo concert artist, and also sang in opera, scoring success as Handel’s Acis in St. Gallen (1984) and as Mozart’s Belmonte in Chicago (1988). In 1987 he joined the faculty of the Ind. Univ. School of Music in Bloomington, but continued to make appearances as a singer.
