Ellerton, John Lodge (real name, John Lodge), English poet and composer; b. Chester, Jan. 11, 1801; d. London, Jan. 3, 1873. He was educated at Brasenose Coll., Oxford (B.A., 1821; M.A., 1828) and also studied counterpoint under Pietro Terriani in Rome, where he composed 7 Italian operas. He lived for some time in Germany, where he wrote 2 German operas. Besides his operas, he wrote an oratorio, Paradise Lost (1856), 6 syms., 4 concert overtures, 4 string quintets, 50 string quartets, 3 string trios, 8 trios for various instruments, 13 sonatas, 61 glees, 83 vocal duets, and songs.
