Donati, Pino
Donati, Pino, Italian opera director, administrator, and composer; b. Verona, May 9, 1907; d. Rome, Feb. 24, 1975. After studying violin, he received instruction in composition from Paribeni. He was an opera director at the Verona Arena (1936–43), in Lisbon (1946–50), and in Bologna (1950–56). In 1958 he became artistic director of the Chicago Lyric Opera; from 1964 until his death he served as its co-artistic director with Bruno Bartoletti; from 1968 he also was director of the Florence Opera. In 1939 he married Maria Caniglia. Among his works were the operas Corradino lo Svevo (Verona, April 4, 1931) and Lancillotto del lago (Bergamo, Oct. 2,1938), and chamber music.
