Baldwin, John

Baldwin, John, English tenor, anthologist, and composer; b. c. 1559; d. London, Aug. 28, 1615. He was a tenor lay clerk at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, in 1575, and later was a Gentleman without pay (1594–98) and a full member (from 1598) of the Chapel Royal. His Commonplace-book (1581–1606) preserves valuable works of the era, and also includes some of his own compositions. He also completed the Sextus partbook of Tudor Masses in the Forrest-Heyther collection and prepared a copy of Byrd’s anthology of keyboard music as My Ladye Nevells Booke (1591).
