One Night at McCool's
One Night at McCool's ★★ 2001 (R)
Quirky and inventive, this poor man's “Rashomon” gets points for effort, but the execution doesn't always live up to the ambition. Easygoing bartender Randy (Dillon) is involved in a murder by aggressively materialistic con artist Jewel (Tyler) and before he knows it, he's in love. Somehow his sleazy lawyer cousin (Reiser) becomes involved, as well as Det. Dehling (Goodman) who is investigating the murder of Jewel's former partner (Clay). Of course, all three fall in love, and we see the preceding night's events through each set of love-struck eyes as they spill their guts to a hitman (Douglas), a shrink (McIntire), and a priest (Jenkins), respectively. Douglas's outlandish toupee and understated portrayal of the hitman, as well as some fine comic touches by Dillon, are highlights. 93m/C VHS, DVD .
