Nine young blacks are pulled off an Alabama freight train in 1931, accused of raping two white women. Quickly convicted, they were all sentenced to the electric chair. Their case is appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and, in 1933, New York attorney Sam Leibowitz (Hutton) travels to the deeply segregated South to work on their defense.
