Heaven and Earth
Heaven and Earth ★★ 1993 (R)
Conclusion of Stone's Vietnam trilogy (after “Platoon” and “Born on the Fourth of July”) focuses on Vietnamese woman (film debut of Le) and her life under the French and American occupations. Jones is the American soldier who marries her and eventually brings her to the U.S. Not one for subtleties, Stone chases melodramatic excess with finesse of lumberjack, sawing away at guilt and remorse from a “woman's point of view.” Cranky Tommy Lee shows up too late to save flick and is saddled with a perplexing I.D. to boot. Flawed, ambitious, and interesting if a student of Stone. Based on the two autobiographies of Le Ly Haslip, “When Heaven and Earth Changed Places” and “Child of War, Woman of Peace.” Filmed on location in Thailand. 142m/C VHS, DVD . Hiep Thi Le, Tommy Lee Jones, Joan Chen, Haing S. Ngor, Debbie Reynolds, Conchata Ferrell, Dustin Nguyen, Liem Whatley, Dale Dye; D: Oliver Stone; W: Oliver Stone; C: Robert Richardson; M: Kitaro.
