Pursuing an early interest in the cinema, French director and screenwriter Nadine Trintignant dropped out of school at age 15 to become an assistant in a film lab. She subsequently worked as an assistant editor and a script clerk before becoming the highly sought-after editor for such directors as Serge Bourguignon, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, and Jean-Luc Godard. Trintignant launched her own directing career with a few shorts and a number of television productions, then undertook her first feature film in 1967. She wrote her own scripts which frequently starred her actor husband Jean-Louis Trintignant. Nadine Trintignant's brother Serge Marquand is an actor, while another brother Christian Marquand is an actor-director.
