Scrivener, Christiane (1925—)
French economist and politician. Born on September 1, 1925; graduated from Lycée de Grenoble; graduated from Harvard Business School; married Pierre Scrivener, in 1944; children: one son (died).
Born in 1925, Christiane Scrivener earned a diploma from the Lycée de Grenoble in France before graduating from Harvard Business School. From 1958 to 1976, she served as the director of various business and governmental agencies dedicated to international technical cooperation. A member of the Union for French Democracy (UFD), she became directly involved in politics in 1976, when she started a two-year term as junior minister for consumer affairs. Between 1979 and 1988, Scrivener served as a member of the European Parliament, and in January 1989 was named a commissioner of the European Community (EC). In this role she oversaw tax issues, and in January 1993 her responsibilities expanded to include the oversight of consumer affairs. She stepped down as commissioner in 1995, and the following year became a mediator with the Society General. Her service to the greater European community earned her prestigious commendations from such countries as Belgium and Luxemburg, and she was named an officer of the Legion of Honor in 1995.
