Libussa (c. 680–738)
Libussa (c. 680–738)
Queen of Bohemia. Name variations: Libusa; Princess Libusa or Libuša. Born in Bohemia around 680; died in 738; daughter of Crocus, king of Bohemia; sister of Tetka and Kascha.
Very few sources remain that give evidence of this Bohemian queen and warrior. Her story is told by Aeneas Silvius in his Historia Boëmii. Libussa succeeded her father Crocus about 700 as his only heir; apparently, she was a great believer in both military conquest and women's rule. Her two sisters, Tetka and Kascha , became her closest advisors and held high offices in her reign, as did other women. Libussa spent much of her reign engaged in battles, with mostly female soldiers, against many neighboring regions in an effort to expand her realm. After about 40 years, Libussa was removed from office during a coup d'etat by Valasca , one of her generals.
