Hanbury, Elizabeth (1793–1901)
British philanthropist. Born in 1793; died in 1901; daughter of Quakers; married Cornelius Hanbury, in 1826; children: Charlotte Hanbury (1830–1900).
The daughter of Quakers, Elizabeth Hanbury accompanied Elizabeth Fry on her prison rounds in the early 1800s and advocated prison reform. She was also an active abolitionist. Her daughter Charlotte Hanbury , who worked side by side with her mother, would later establish a mission in Tangier for improving the lives of Moorish prisoners. Elizabeth Hanbury's autobiography was published in 1901, the year of her death.
