Browne, Sidney Jane (1850–1941)

British nurse, known as "the modern Florence Nightingale." Name variations: Dame Sidney Browne. Born on January 5, 1850; died on August 13, 1941.

In a life dedicated to nursing soldiers, Dame Sidney Jane Browne served in four campaigns, including the Egyptian War, the Sudan campaign, the Boer War, and the First World War. She was recognized with numerous honors and also served as the first president of the Royal College of Nursing.
