Biret, Idil (1941—)
Turkish pianist who revived many neglected piano works which came to be included in the classical piano repertoire. Born in Ankara, Turkey, in 1941; studied in Paris with Alfred Cortot and in Germany with Wilhelm Kempff.
Born in Ankara, Turkey, Idil Biret studied in Paris with Alfred Cortot and in Germany with Wilhelm Kempff. Her 1952 Paris debut was a great success. A virtuoso artist interested in often-neglected music, she made the first recording of Liszt's transcription of the Berlioz Symphonie fantastique. Her recordings of Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit and Alban Berg's Piano Sonata reveal a strong technique and intellect. The French composer dedicated his piano sonata to her.
