Taught at Marin Community College, then Dominican College; representing California, elected as a Democrat to 103rd Congress of US House of Representatives (1992), the 1st former welfare mother in Congress; became chair of the Democratic Caucus Task Force on Children and Families, and ranking member of the House Education committee's subcommittee on Education Reform; also a senior member on House Science committee's subcommittee on Energy; won 7th term (2004).
