Wolter, Charlotte (1834–1897)
Austrian actress . Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1834; died in 1897.
Charlotte Wolter began her artistic career in Budapest in 1857. Four years later, she appeared at the Victoria Theater in Berlin where her performance of Hermione in The Winter's Tale took the playgoing world by storm. In 1862, she joined the Vienna Hofburg Theater, where she stayed until her death in 1897. According to her wish, she was buried in the costume of Iphigenia, in which role she had achieved her most brilliant success. Considered one of the great tragic actresses of her time, Charlotte Wolter excelled in a rich repertory of classic and historical characters.
