Williams, Camilla (1922–)

African-American soprano and teacher. Born in Danville, VA, Oct 18, 1922; Virginia State College, BS, 1941; studied with Marion Szekely-Freschl, Hubert Giesen, Sergius Kagen, and Leo Taubman; m. Charles Beavers (attorney), 1950.

Won the Marian Anderson Award (1943 and 1944) and Philadelphia Orchestra Youth Award (1944); made operatic debut at New York City Opera in title role of Madama Butterfly (1946), remaining there until 1954; also toured widely as a concert artist; taught at Brooklyn College and City College of New York (1970–73); began teaching at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington (1977).
