Born Feb 18, 1933, in Glasgow, Scotland; died April 3, 1975, of accidental mixture of alcohol and barbiturates in London, England, hours after successfully opening in a new play; m. Leading lady of the English stage, made London debut as Amanda in Time Remembered (1954); had enormous success as Alison Porter in Look Back in Anger in London and NY; also appeared as Ophelia in Hamlet and in The Crucible, Duel of Angels and Old Times; films include Storm Over the Nile, Look Back in Anger, The Luck of Ginger Coffey and Where Eagles Dare. Nominated for Oscar for performance as Clara Dawes in Sons and Lovers (1960).
