Anaesthetist; served as chair of the Réunion Island Regional Council (1993–98) and state secretary for the French-Speaking World (1995–97); as a member of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, elected to 5th European Parliament (1999–2004). Named Knight of the Legion of Honour (1999).
