New Zealand editor, feminist, and temperance worker. Name variations: Lucy Lovell-Smith; (pseudonym) Vesta. Born June 1, 1861, in Christchurch, New Zealand; died Mar 3, 1936, in St. Albans, New Zealand; dau. of James Thomas Smith (compositor) and Eleanor Phoebe (Macleod) Smith.
Was active in New Zealand Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and Canterbury Women's Institute and supported their campaigns for women's rights; edited WCTU's page in Prohibitionist, writing under pseudonym Vesta (1894); helped establish WCTU's White Ribbon, which she edited (1903); also edited National Council of Women of New Zealand's magazine, Bulletin (1928–29); changed name to Lovell-Smith (1926).
