Smith, Jean Kennedy (1928–)

American diplomat. Born Jean Ann Kennedy in Boston, Massachusetts, 1928; dau. of Joseph P. Kennedy (1888–1969, financier and diplomat) and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy (1890–1995); sister of Patricia Kennedy Lawford, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, John Fitgerald Kennedy (president of US), Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy (US senator); m. Stephen Smith (attorney), 1956 (died 1990); children: Stephen Edward Smith Jr. (b. 1957, conflict-resolution consultant); William Kennedy Smith (b. 1960, doctor); Amanda Mary Smith (b. 1967, writer); Kym Maria Smith (b. 1972).

The youngest of the Kennedy sisters, was appointed ambassador to Ireland by President Bill Clinton (1993).
