Organized and directed the raising of Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose (1982); published The Mary Rose: The Excavation and Raising of Henry VIII's Flagship (1982) and Life at Sea: Tudors and Stuarts (1994), among others; elected honorary fellow of Portsmouth Polytechnic (1982); served as chair of Council for Nautical Archaeology. Made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1983).
