Served as secretary, Netherlands Overseas Mission Council (1984–88), study secretary, Association of Catholic Social Organizations (1988–99), and chair, European Forum of National Committees of the Laity (1996–2000); as a member of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats (EPP), elected to 5th European Parliament (1999–2004).
