Jelsma, Clara Mitsuko (1931–)

Japanese-American essayist and short-story writer. Born 1931 in Glenwood, Hawaii; dau. of Umetaro Kubojiri and Iku (Hayashi) Kubojiri (both Japanese immigrants); m. Dallas Jelsma, 1956.

Stories reflect experiences of Kubojiri family and consider racial tension against a backdrop of Hawaiian history and landscape; works include Tempest Tales (1981) and Mauna Loa Rains (1991).
