Journalist (1968–71), agent and editor (1971–74); SDP press secretary (1974–76), then party secretary (1987–91); served as member of Parliament and vice-chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Forestry (1991–95); as a European Socialist, elected to 5th European Parliament (1999–2004).
