Idlibi, 'Ulfah al- (1912–)

Syrian teacher and author. Name variations: Ulfa al-Idlibi; Ulfat Idlibi. Born 1912 in Damascus, Syria; children: son (died 1947).

One of the most prominent female writers in Syria, devoted the bulk of her writing to short stories, many of which explore the lives of Arab women, particularly in Damascus; wrote more than 100 stories and 4 books, including Shamian Stories (1954), Farewell, Damascus (1963), Damascus, Smile of Sorrow (released in US as Sabriya: A Novel, 1980).
