Herne (actor and playwright), 1878 (died 1901); children: Julie Herne, Dorothy Herne, and Chrystal Herne (actress).
Came to US as a child; grew up in San Francisco; on stage, gained reputation as an advocate of the new realism; appeared in husband's play Hearts of Oak (1879); also appeared in David Belasco's Chums (1879).
