Freeman, Mavis (1907–)

Australian bacteriologist and biochemist. Name variations: Mavis Louisa Freeman. Born Jan 30, 1907, in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.

Worked at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (1928–40, 1946–48); while there, identified the microbe responsible for Q fever with Macfarlane Burnet (1937); during WWII, served in Australian Army Medical Corps, becoming captain, and worked on research to find a safe method for blood transfusion in regions at risk for malaria.
