De Sousa, Noémia (1926–)

Mozambican poet and journalist. Name variations: Noemia de Sousa; Noemia du Sousa; (pseudonym) Vera Micaia. Born Noémia Carolina Abranches de Sousa in 1926 (some sources cite 1927) in Lourenço Marquez (now Maputo), Mozambique; attended secondary school in Brazil.

Was a politically active journalist in Mozambique under Portuguese colonialism (1950s); published poetry in Mozambican and Portuguese journals; lived with Portuguese husband in Lisbon where she continued writing, protesting Salizar's regime; was forced to seek exile in France (1964), where she wrote under pseudonym Vera Micaia; works are strongly influenced by African-American and Caribbean writing.
