Chabot, Maria (1913–2001)
American patron of Native American art. Born Sept 1913 in San Antonio, Texas; died July 9, 2001, in Albuquerque, New Mexico; studied Spanish and archaeology in Mexico City; married Dana K. Bailey, 1961 (div. 1961).
Moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico (1931); during depression, worked for Works Progress Administration, photographing and documenting Native American and Spanish Colonial arts and crafts; ran a ranch for Mary Cabot Wheelwright for 20 years; was named head of the Indian advocacy group (1936) and began the popular Indian markets on the Plaza in Santa Fe; visited Indian villages to encourage women, especially potters, to participate, including Maria Martinez; was a great friend of Georgia O'Keeffe.
