Born Mildred Cooke in 1526 in Essex, England; died in 1589; eldest dau. of Sir Anthony Cooke and Anne Fitzwilliam Cooke; sister of Anne Cooke Bacon (1528–1610), Elizabeth Russell (1528–1609), and Catherine Killigrew (c. 1530–1583); m. William Cecil, Baron Burghley, 1545; children: Anne Cecil (1556–1589, who married Edward de Vere, 17th earl of Oxford); Robert Cecil, 1st Lord of Salisbury (1563–1612); Elizabeth Cecil (b. 1589).
Learned scholar, said to have translated part of the work of St. Chrysostom but refused to publish it.
