Bliss, Mary Elizabeth (1824–1909)

American first daughter and White House hostess. Name variations: Betty Taylor; Betty Bliss. Born Mary Elizabeth Taylor in 1824; died 1909; dau. of Margaret Smith Taylor (1788–1852) and Zachary Taylor (1784–1850, president of the US); sister of Knox Taylor; m. William Wallace Smith Bliss (1815–1853, Zachary Taylor's adjutant and confidential secretary); m. Philip Pendleton Dandridge; no children.

Often called the "Wild Rose of the White House," functioned as social hostess for her mother Margaret Smith Taylor.
