Blanche of Valois (c. 1316–?)
Holy Roman empress. Born around 1316; daughter ofMahaut de Chatillon (d. 1358) and Charles I, count of Valois (1270–1325, son of Philip III, king of France); half-sister of Philip VI of Valois (1293–1350), king of France (r. 1328–1350), andJeanne of Valois (c. 1294–1342); first wife of Charles IV Luxemburg (1316–1378), Holy Roman emperor (r. 1347–1378).
Wencelas Charles of Bohemia and Luxemburg, who would become Holy Roman emperor Charles IV, met his first wife Blanche of Valois at the court of her cousin Charles IV, king of France. A fresco of the couple can be found in the castle of Karlstein, near Prague. Emperor Charles also married Anna of Schweidnitz and Elizabeth of Pomerania (mother of Sigismund, king of Hungary and Bohemia).
