Simon Antoine Jean Lhuilier

1750-1840

Swiss mathematician. As a result of winning an academic competition in mathematics, he wrote a math textbook intended for use in Polish schools. This effort resulted in his appointment to tutor members of the Polish royal family. This honor was followed by an offer to chair mathematics departments in both Germany and Switzerland. While teaching, he conducted his own research and made discoveries that were important in the development of topology.
