Raymond Kurzweil
Raymond Kurzweil
American computer and software engineer who was awarded the Grace M. Hopper Award for developing a device that scans and reads printed pages to the blind. This machine is able to scan and recognize printed characters reliably, as well as implement pronunciation rules to make the synthesized voice understandable. Kurzweil's invention is expected to greatly increase the number of works available to the blind, in addition to the relatively few that are published in Braille.
