Dutch physician who is remembered for his description of the disease beriberi, which results from a deficiency in nutrition and is marked by inflammation of the nerves and swelling. Tulp is also known for his description of ileocecal valves, which are muscles that open from the small intestine into the large intestine. Tulp was the personal physician and friend of Dutch painter Rembrandt.
