American physician who with Barry Marshall showed that a bacterium may be responsible for many gastric and intestinal ulcers. This bacterium, Helicobacter pylori, is the first to be linked to ulcers, and its discovery suggests that conventional treatment methods may be inappropriate. This, in turn, has led to investigations in antibiotic methods to control ulcers. However, as of this writing the traditional treatments of lowered stress and bland diet are still common.
