American physician who wrote A Treatise on a Malignant Epidemic, Commonly Called Spotted Fever (1811), the first important book about cerebrospinal meningitis. North recommended taking the patient's temperature as part of routine diagnosis sixty years before Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich brought the clinical thermometer into general use.
