Chandra Harish

1923-1983

Indian-American mathematician who studied theoretical physics and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1947. While there, he attended a lecture by Nobel laureate Wolfgang Pauli, during which he pointed out a mistake by Pauli; the two became life-long friends. At Columbia University (1950-63) he collaborated with many well known mathematicians and worked on theoretical geometry and representations of semi-simple Lie groups. He received many awards, including election to the National Academy of Science.
