Teuthoidea (squids; class Cephalopoda, subclass Coleoidea) An order of cephalopods which have an internal, elongate pro-ostracum. The phragmocone may be present, the rostrum is not. Eight arms and two tentacles are present. The order probably originated in the Lower Cretaceous from a belemnite (Belemnitida) ancestor. The squids are most closely related to the cuttlefish, both groups having ten suckered arms around the mouth.
