Symphyla (phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Atelocerata) A class of small (2–10 mm long), fast-moving arthropods that live in soil and superficially resemble centipedes although their mouth-parts are similar to those of insects. Most feed on decayed vegetation, but some are crop pests. There are about 120 species, found wherever temperatures never fall below –26°C.
