swarm cell (swarmer) In Myxomycetes, a flagellated, amoeba-like cell, lacking a cell wall, produced when a spore germinates. Swarm cells are usually produced singly, but spores sometimes release up to 4. They ingest food, reproduce by division, and mature as gametes which fuse to form zygotes. These develop into a plasmodium.
