Sonneratia (family Sonneratiaceae) A genus of mangrove trees with breathing roots, in which the flowers have many stamens, inserted on the calyx tube, and the ovary is superior. The flowers are sour-smelling, nocturnal, and bat-pollinated. The fruit is a leathery berry seated on the persistent calyx. There are 5 species, occurring from eastern Africa and Madagascar to the western Pacific islands.
