sieve plate A region of pores that perforate the end of a sieve cell. Cytoplasmic strands (see CYTOPLASM) may pass through the pores, interconnecting adjacent sieve cells and facilitating translocation. A sieve area is occasionally present in the lateral wall of a sieve cell.
