Scleraxonia (subclass Octocorallia, order Gorgonacea) A suborder of octocorals in which the central axial skeleton is formed from spicules bound together more or less solidly by either horny or calcareous material. The suborder includes Corallicum (red or precious coral) among its 26 genera in seven families.
